Area Rug Information
That Comes Clean

Basic area rug information and advice for the cleaning procedure of the occasional spill and a stain removal index.

To remove wax, place a brown paper bag over the spot of wax. Iron the wax out by placing a hot iron on the bag and moving it back and forth over the wax. Don't allow the iron to remain still on the bag. Move the iron around for a few minutes until the wax is absorbed into the bag. Repeat if necessary.

Ink can be removed from an area rug by saturating the affected area with hair spray and allowing it to dry. Brush lightly with a solution of vinegar and water.

Remove glue from an area rug by using a clean cloth that has been soaked with vinegar or alcohol.

If you get chewing gum stuck in your rug press ice against it until it becomes brittle and the hardened glue breaks off. Use a spot remover to remove the last remains.

Area Rug Information to Clean Stains

  • Don't rub at the stain.
  • Blot up any excess with white paper towels. Apply the recommended procedure (below) with a clean dry cloth working from the edge to the center.
  • Do not soak.
  • Pat down with white paper towels, and allow to air dry, or dry with a fan or hair dryer.
  • Work quickly.
  • Restore the pile lightly with a brush.

It is recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every three to six years depending on the amount of traffic your rugs get.
