A Bathroom Decorating
Idea to Gratify

One Bathroom decorating idea would be to decorate the intimate spaces of your home the same way you decorate the rest of your house.

People tend to steer their focus on the areas of the home where they know to spend a lot of time, like the family room and the kitchen and of course moms like to know that their kids’ rooms are done. By the time it comes to do the master bed or bath it gets pushed to the back burner or given a back seat because "no one sees this room anyway.”

But you need to feel comfortable and rested in these rooms as well.

Enjoy a fresh look with a bathroom decorating idea that doesn't need to be expensive but can transform your bath into beautiful private sanctuary and a little pampering at the same time.

Clear the clutter,

and organize the stuff you’ve accumulated.

Take out all of the things from under the vanity, the drawers and the medicine cabinet and start tossing.

If you haven't used the product since you bought it two years ago or it is half-gone you aren't going to start using it now. Chances are you forgot it was there, and it’s not a good idea to start using it now anyway because of the shelf life on cosmetics.

Keep only those things that are some musts have and organize in clear plastic containers, boxes, bins and cosmetic bags. So you can see what is in there but organized and out of sight.

Use decorative vessels to hold anything that may stay out on the counter, but think outside of the normal “bathroom accessory.”

  • Bamboo, for a natural spa look,
  • An Italian pottery vase for the Tuscan bath,
  • Pewter urns for the masculine,
  • China bowls and vases for a romantic feel or cottage style,

Keep a water proof container in the shower for the items used every day.

A bathroom decorating idea with quick and immediate results is to paint. Choose a nice clean color in either a natural tone, or soft spa colors which are both soothing to the senses and nice to work with.

This could be a project you do yourself if you are so inclined.

Consider a faux finish.

A great way to introduce a faux finish into your home if you like the look but don’t want to make the commitment. The bathroom is small enough to try yourself, or if you don't want to attempt the project yourself, its cost effective to hire an artist for a really distinctive look.

Wallpaper may not suit for a master bath because of the steam of the shower but perhaps a border if you want the addition of a pattern.

Using a piece of furniture in the bathroom softens the utilitarian feel adding warmth and another style element. If your bathroom is large, you can introduce a cabinet with glass doors to serve as a linen closet or an antique chest of drawers.

A small bath can accommodate a bench to stack fluffy towels tied up in twine or ribbon, and if you can fit one, a small chair would be a great addition. I love that look in a bathroom but can't fit one in mine.

A lot of bathrooms have the shower door enclosures but if you have a tub that needs a curtain consider using fabric drapes instead of your typical "plastic.”

Using a fabric shower curtain softens the bath and is more sensual. It gives you the freedom to be more custom and individual with your decorating. (Of course you will still need to use a liner.)

Take ready-made drapes that can be taken down to wash and hang as a shower curtain. If you sew, you can add length to the bottom for a more luxurious look, or add a ruffle for a cottage bathroom style.

Fabric at the window offers ways to introduce pattern and color. It could just be a simple treatment, by picking out a favorite fabric, and turning it into a valance you stitch yourself using ribbon to tie or trim for accents.

Depending on the fabric, it could fit into any style motif. Be creative, especially in the kid's bathroom.

A fairly simple bathroom decorating idea is changing the light fixture to another style, or installing a chandelier.

Adding a chandelier would be a nice romantic touch or an old world feel to the bathroom. Installing a pair of wall sconces on either side of the mirror gives you more flattering light for applying make-up and shaving.

It you weren't thinking that permanent with your bathroom decorating idea at this point, changing the type of light bulb will give you more light or less depending on the needs and mood you want created.

Focus on small changes and add a stylish new look.

  • Follow a motif or color scheme and weave throughout the room
  • Place extra hand towels in a decorative bowl and bath towels in a basket
  • Look for great looking vessels to hold everything from trash to toothbrushes
  • Add flowers or greenery to give the space fresh appeal
  • Hang narrow shelves on a wall to display
  • Remove the medicine chest to hang a decorative mirror
  • Use stylish mirrors as a focal point and give the feeling of larger space
  • A hint of a blue tint on the ceiling can refresh the whole room
  • Area rugs infuse the space with color and may be changed whenever you want
  • Limit the colors in the bathroom for a striking effect
  • Steam and water may make bathroom wallpaper impractical Wallpaper the powder room instead where there is no steam to worry about
  • For ease of cleaning, tile on the shower walls should have a shiny glaze
  • A fresh coat of grout can seal old imperfections and make tiles look new

What's your bathroom decorating idea of luxury?

  • Add fragrance to the room with fine toiletries like aromatherapy soaps, bath salts and bubble baths, scented candles, and the use of calming fragrances of vanilla and lavender,
  • Natural sponges, stacks of fluffy towels on a stool or bench,
  • Pretty bottles to hold shampoo,
  • Bud vases with a single flower on a tray
  • A decorative hook to hang a fluffy robe. It will keep your robe handy but also give some texture to the wall.
  • Include plants in your decorating bathrom scheme for a spa like feeling in the bath
  • An opportunity to be even more creative and enhance your decorating theme is to replace old hardware with new
  • The addition of a decorative box or basket to hold magazines and other reading material for bath time
  • A radio or compact disc player for creating an spa-like atmosphere conducive to relaxation
  • A plush rug underfoot, and the big one . . .time for yourself!
