Contemporary Home Furnishings
Emphasize Space with Subtlety

Contemporary home furnishings draw heavily on sleek, angular shapes using minimal textures and patterns creating a clean look.

Sometimes when people think “contemporary” they think that the interior spaces decorated that way are cold and uninviting, when actually just the opposite can be true.

You can still have a comfortable and welcoming home but by using less. Just be sure that the "less" you are using are pieces that make a statement. They heighten functionality and make it easy to create a sense of unity throughout your home.

No matter what you budget is, by focusing on color, space, and shape, you can get the fresh clean look of a contemporary interior design in your home, and because of the simplicity of the style, it tends to be very affordable.

Steel, leather and glass are common materials, and the fabrics used in contemporary home furnishings tend to be understated and uniform in color, emphasizing the space more than what is in it.

Upholstered furniture often wears the neutral tones in earth, black, white, or grey and in natural fibers that show some texture found in wool, cotton, linen, silk, jute and leather.

This gives you a calm backdrop and makes room for the "bold" factor in the way of one great painting or a splash of drama in an intense color throw pillow.

If your room dictates, sectional sofas which are designed to be used in L-shapes, U-shapes or with a chaise fit nicely into an interior of a modern feel.

Upholstered pieces such as sofas, chairs, and ottomans will normally have exposed legs as opposed to a skirted style and keeping with the clean approach no trims, fringe, or tassels will be evident in a contemporary environment.

The other furniture in the room wants to be simple and uncluttered without carvings, curves or other decoration.

Smooth, clean, geometric shapes of steel-framed, glass-topped coffee or end tables work as a compliment to the soft texture of the upholstery.

For window dressings, blinds and window shades are heavily favored. These treatments perfectly complement the angularity and cool chic of contemporary furniture styles.

Contemporary home furnishings make a bold statement in the bedroom too. Beginning with a bed that makes an impact.

Consider one with clean lines and few accentuations if any, and just the headboard. Not using a footboard will continue the minimal designs of clean lines.

A tall upholstered headboard is one option that comes to mind as well as a platform bed. The other furnishings in the room are basic in structure and have clean lines as well.

The same basic principles, of “less is more” hold true in the dining room. Contemporary home furnishings for in the dining room may consist of an awesome table with chairs and feature a clean silhouette.

The shapes are most important. Here the adornments on the display and storage pieces chosen will be minimal and any wood chosen will be beautiful in its own right without embellishments and inlays. Glass tops, mirror, and metals are all evident.

You'll want to keep the dinnerware simplistic too. Bring in texture with silverware, napkins, place mats and centerpieces.
