Simple fall decorating ideas will add warmth to your home as the summer days fade and cooler days are upon us capturing the mood of the season.

One of the most striking things about fall is the changing colors of the leaves on the trees set against the clear blue sky on a crisp cool day. And those colors can be intense, from the reds and pinks to the vivid oranges and yellows, to the more subdued copper and browns.

Take a stroll through the farmers market, and even the produce of the season can be of an inspiration for fall decorating ideas. You’ll see rich tones of deep orange in pumpkins, red and green apples, soft butter and deep greens of squash and gourds and Indian corn, (which can be great for an outdoor display) that exhibits colors of pale yellow, dark reds, brown and black kernels and not to mention an abundance of beautiful mums in rich earthy colors.

It can get very creative when arranging these gifts from nature for seasonal decorating.

• Pumpkins are great for fall decorating and when left intact will last most of the season. Buy several as they are fairly inexpensive and abundant. Group them in bowls for an instant centerpiece or line mini pumpkins along the mantle along with some ivy, or incorporate a few colorful gourds for added texture.
• Fall is reaping the earth’s bounty and the time of year apples are harvested. Display a large amount of red or green or mix of the two in a wooden bowl or wicker basket. Add some silk leaves in among the apples or weave ribbon through the apples for additional color.

  Beaded fruit (found at the craft stores) displayed in a bowl makes a stunning display.

• When it begins to cool down outdoors create visual warmth in the home and set the mood for any occasion with candles. They add a welcoming glow and infuse the air with autumn scents such as pumpkin, cinnamon cranberry pine and vanilla.

  Buy them in the earthy colors of the season of browns and oranges. If desired enhance your candle display with ornamentation by adding silk flowers, ivy, twigs and ornamental pumpkins and gourds that can be found at the craft stores. Tie raffia around the them or copper wire strung with beads for sparkle.

• Fall decorating ideas that fill the house with aroma, creates a feeling of coziness and you can also put a scent in the air with cinnamon pinecones as they can become part of the decoration in baskets by the fireplace or as part of the display on bookshelves or the mantle.
• All the materials for a great fall centerpiece can come from outside as you enjoy the crisp cool air of outdoors. Collect some branches, colorful leaves, pinecones and acorns on a walk. Combine them with the other bounties from nature to complete a fall table scape or centerpiece. Include some of your candles.

  A slipcover in a heavier fabric suitable for the fall like chenille, corduroy, faux leather or velvet would be great in a plain color or a pattern that reminds you of the season such as a floral or leaf pattern.

• Depending on the extent you choose to change your seasonal décor, in the same manner that a slipcover changes the feel of a room, follow through with window dressings, towels, and bedding all in heavier fabrics that suggest autumn.
• Other options for adding fabrics and another way to introduce pattern that is not making a major commitment or incurring a big expense is to add pillows, throws or blankets, especially in the new fiber combinations of cashmere, mohair, or silk and wool. Try out some plaids in the rich fall tones.

  Pillow covers can be used for a quick change from season to season. Introduce some furry accents and trims for added texture.

  Soften the look of the dining table and layer fabric by placing a runner on top of your tablecloth.

• Add an area rug or runner on the floors.
