Depending on your needs, look to floor to ceiling bookcases and shelving units that are built in so that a library ladder is necessary to retrieve the volumes on the high shelves.
You can mount hanging bookshelves and have the use of book stands for heavy reference books that are too heavy to hold comfortably.
If more than one reader will be using this room consider utilizing more than just one book shelving unit for all of the books, and have one bookcase for each person to keep things organized and readily accessible.
If the room is a working library have the use of a desk, or a table with chairs that provides a working surface for writing and taking notes so that you may stay focused and work uninterrupted.
But if the room is solely for the purpose of reading include comfortable seating, such as chairs with ottomans, a sofa or settee, chairs around a table. Whatever you find comfortable to read in is called for here. It could also be a reclining chair if you are short on space but still want your feet up.
Good lighting is essential. In addition to any overhead lighting you may already have in the room, you will need task reading lamps and desk lamps so you can see what you are reading and not strain your eyes.
Your reading lamps should be positioned over your shoulder as to avoid any glare on the pages. Get lamps that provide enough light to read the smallest text possible.
