Interior Design Tips to Inspire and Inform
Interior design tips and guidelines to be aware of that will make your decorating projects go smoother with successful results.
Everyone wants a beautiful home that expresses who we are and one that welcomes others to feel comfortable and at home.
And I hate to say there are rules to follow because every one's tastes are unique, so bottom line is:
When
decorating a new home
(at least new to you) know what you love and to let your own preferences and the use of these interior design tips guide your decisions.
Measure, measure and measure . . .
- Preferably before you go shopping. The piece of furniture might be beautiful but if it doesn't fit in the room or through the doorway it's not pretty anymore.
- Make a sketch of your room and record the dimensions, including the location of windows, openings and other features like electrical outlets and take it with you shopping.
- Arrange furniture allowing for a natural flow of traffic in and out of the room.
Have a seat
- Redefine your seating into smaller groupings for cozy seating and conversations. Whenever possible use smaller sofas, (no one sits in the middle anyway) and cushy chairs over larger and sometimes awkward sofas.
- If the seating is placed too far apart, it is difficult to talk comfortably.
- Don't place the back of a sofa or chair so that it is the first thing you see. Arrange seating so that it directs people into the room.
- And don’t worry about seating for a crowd. When you need to seat a large gathering, you’ll improvise.
- In fact, are you having company and want to spruce the up the place? Implementing just a few of these
home decorating ideas
will make you feel inspired and a gracious host.
- Avoid being in a rush to fill your rooms with furniture. Instead, wait until you can buy the best quality furniture you can afford. It will last longer and be a better buy in the long run.
Interior Design Tips to Color your World
|
Painting is the quickest way to dramatic change. Keep a sense of continuity by painting the trim and other unifying elements the same color throughout the home.
With so many paint color options, hold off painting your walls until everything else, upholstery, carpet and window treatments have been chosen.
Once you do make your paint color selection, be sure to sample it in the room first. Those deceiving little paint chips can be quite testy.
Always try sample fabrics at home to see how they look in your room. The lighting in your room is different from the store.

Perfectly Arranged
- Be sure to fully consider the uses of the room before deciding on furniture and the arrangement. For example the guest room that doubles as a home office will need a desk, lighting and storage of files as well as a bed for the overnight guests.
- Define each area of an open floor plan with area rugs and furniture placement.
- Interior design tips play up the important features of a focal point in a room when arranging furniture.
- Don't invest a ton in what is "trendy.” Try out the latest in smaller accessories.
- Start with the basics that are functional, classic and long lasting and build from there.
- Repetition of shapes, color, fabrics and patterns creates harmony throughout the house.
Your Own Style
- Don't decorate like your mom. Trust your instincts and these interior design tips to let your personal style show.
- If everything in the room matches perfectly it lacks charm and gets boring quick. Mix it up a little by using different pieces and even different styles so not to have everything coordinate perfectly.
- Infuse a bit of traditional in a modern room and if you have a traditional style setting mix in something modern.
- Trying to decorate around something that you just can't stand and isn't your style never work. You will never be happy and will just be pouring good money after bad. It is better to just get rid of it and start fresh.
- Or if you have too much stuff, these
organizing tips
will help you become clutter free, and who doesn't need help with their closet?
Closet Organization Systems
Helping you choose the right closet organization systems for your home. Choose from kids, custom, cheap, metal, wood, wire, small, shoe and walk in closet systems.
Shine Light on the Subject
- Lighting should be on dimmers when possible. This avoids the lighting from becoming too harsh. Mix your overhead lighting with table and floor lamps with soft white bulbs for pools of flattering light and ambiance.
