Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Let us talk about some kitchen decorating ideas that will turn the one place where everyone seems to gather even more inviting.

Do you feel as though the kitchen can seem like a hard room to decorate? I know many times people feel when it comes time to redecorate the kitchen it involves a major renovation and a budget to match. But that doesn't have to be the case.

You can transform your kitchen with small projects and make it as homey as the rest of your home by really only adding some personal touches that make it your own.

These decorative touches can be anything from adding accessories to the tops of your cabinets, accents to the walls, coverings for the windows, wall papering, or a toaster in red.

  • But if you are feeling ambitious painting a wooden floor using a stencil or making a design yourself like a diamond pattern to mimic tiles will visually expand the space changing the entire atmosphere of the kitchen.
  • Paint can also give a new look to your vinyl flooring that is still in good condition.

Decorating Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are the biggest thing in the room so if your cabinets have seen better days some decorative touches are in order.

  • Paint your old, damaged or outdated cabinets in a bright color or faux finish.
  • Stenciling your cabinets are kitchen decorating ideas that can be just as easy as stenciling the walls or floor. Show your creativity with your own design. It could be a border, a motif in the center of the door or just around the hardware.
  • Or you could remove some of the doors on the cabinets to create an open display area. Make a backdrop for displaying dishes and glass ware by covering the back “wall” of the cabinets with decorative paper and attaching picture frame lights for a warm glow when lit.
  • Change the hardware. Changing the hardware makes a big difference to the whole feel of the kitchen and can change the look from country decorating to modern with this one little change.

Just be sure to select hardware that was the same size as your old hardware. Otherwise, you will have to drill new holes and patch up the old ones.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas for Above the Cabinets

The space above the cabinets can sometimes be wasted so adding some decorative elements will add interest. Keep the items that you use on the large scale and not bother with a lot of little things because they will make it look too cluttered and will only need to be dusted.

First check to see if you cabinets are flatted or recessed. If they are recessed, you may have to build the base of your cabinets up a bit with old books to be able to show off your decorative items.

  • Consider urns, baskets, bowls, oversize plates and platters, vintage cookie jars, rocking horses and anything nostalgic or that has an intriguing design or shape, and that captures your imagination.

Play around with the placement on the counter before you try putting them in place. Turn some of your things on their side for added interest to your composition. Add greenery to soften any hard edges and add drama with soft accent lighting.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas for the Walls

  • Kitchen decorating ideas for using some of the plates from the china you stopped using (because too many pieces have been broken but you can't bear to part with them) would be to hang them on the wall or start a collection with mismatched finds you gather from flea markets and yard sales.

Grouping them in an attractive arrangement or hanging from a wrought iron hangar will provide interest and depth to the walls.

  • Another way to add dimensions to the walls would be with architectural finds found at the antique shops or flea markets. Architectural artifacts in the way of iron gates, corbels or just plain fragments will create texture and uniqueness to the kitchen and work particularly well in a cottage or country theme kitchen. Hang them like you would hang your home decorating pictures.
  • Do you like the look of home decorating wallpaper but do not want to make too much of a design commitment? Wall paper borders are an easy way to add a pop of color and pattern to your walls. The borders can run not just at the top of the wall near the ceiling, but 12 - 15" down from the ceiling, at chair rail height, or the top of the back splash.
  • Give your kitchen the flavor of Tuscany by faux painting as another way to work magic on the walls. Or coat one wall with blackboard paint that works on any smooth surface and can be cleaned off with a damp sponge. You could write the dinner menu on the wall or when you need to pick up the kids.
