No Sew Window Treatments
Beauty Without the Bother

No sew window treatments can make “dressing” your windows a snap.

If you don't have a sewing machine (or the time or inclination to pull it out) for some simple window treatments you don’t need to.

All you need is great looking fabric, a little imagination and a lot of patience. And the best thing is because they are so easy and relatively inexpensive you have the design freedom to change them if the creative mood strikes.

But no sew window treatments may not be for everyone nor would I recommend it on every window.

These types of window dressings can use web adhesive or fabric glue which is permanent so there is no room for error. You definitely do not want to use a really expensive fabric, like silk that you could mess up or anything that requires lining.

Fabric that is normally for upholstery comes in widths of 54 inches and the edges at each side is “finished” so there really is no need for hemming. And when you gather this ample width on a rod it makes a nice panel drape of 27-30 inches depending on the fullness you desire.

Drapery rings with clips are a truly easy way to hang fabric of any type for use as drapery panels, curtains or valances.

Slip the rings over a decorative rod and simply attach the fabric with the small clips that hang off the rings to create chic and expensive-looking window treatments.

They are available in a variety of styles that can compliment your room's decor, with metal or wood being the sturdiest. Be sure to check the size of the clip so the fabric you are using will be sure to fit.

When it comes times for cleaning the drapes or if you want to make a change for the seasons simply unclip.

Swags are no sew window treatments that give you easy freedom with your design choices when dressing the top of a window.

The best type of fabric to use for a swag is something flowing or silky so you can achieve the proper draping.

Use one length of fabric, a throw or scarves. Scarves are ideal because they come in a wide range of gorgeous and silky type fabric that drapes well, and some will already have the embellishments that you want. And the biggest advantage is that they are already hemmed and ready to be fashioned into a valance or swag!

Scarf swags add romance to a room and can add softness to any existing treatments you may have on the window like mini blinds, sheers or drapery panels.

Drape them over a decorative rod in a symmetrical (equal fabric on either side) or asymmetrical (where you let one side of the fabric extend longer) fashion. It is strictly personal taste.

Some hardware is available that is especially made for holding swag treatments in place, called wall corbels or you can tie simple knots, or tie with ribbon on a decorative rod.

  • Aside from using scarves and fabric for your no sew window treatments you can use tablecloths that are already hemmed. Make it your own by adding some trim and other accessories that you can find in the notion section of your fabric store, securing them with fabric glue or hand stitch with a needle and thread.
  • Sheets also fall into the category of fabric already hemmed. They come with a pocket built in (the hem at the top) that can easily slip onto a rod, but so it appears less like a sheet, consider grommets at the top.
  • Kits for making etched glass work nicely on windows where you don't need the warmth and texture of fabric but desire something at the window to provide some privacy and filter the light.
  • Get creative with interesting rods of hockey sticks, golf clubs, or pool cue sticks for a den or a bamboo pole for a spa bath.
  • Use velvet ribbon to dress up a store bought white tab top curtains in various widths. Take the tabs off and use the ribbon as ties, by hand stitching in place and tie to a pole or rod.
  • Dig out your costume jewelry to use as decorative buttons at the top.
  • Knot a series of square scarves across a rod for a quick valance.
  • Some woolen throws with fringe works nicely as a treatment where you want to keep the light out.
  • Adhere some fringe to the inner edges or the bottom of ready-made panels.
