Easy Care Seagrass Rugs
Seagrass rugs are popular for their unique texture and understated colors making them the most versatile of the natural floor coverings, bringing an enduring organic style to the home.
An affordable option to any area of your home and with their long-lasting durability are great for high traffic areas, including entryways but as they have a smooth finish, is not recommended for stairs. (It is also recommended that they are not used in very moist or humid conditions as they can be susceptible to mildew.)
One hundred percent natural, the fibers are highly abrasion resistant, non toxic and has the advantage of being totally anti static working beautifully when combined with hardwood flooring for an environmentally friendly compliment to an allergy free environment.
Sea grass grows in paddy fields in coastal regions primarily in southeast Asia that look like large underwater grassy meadows. During the crop cycle the fields are flooded with saltwater.
The reed like fibers have a non porous skin that is smooth to the touch that gives it a naturally smooth texture and sheen equally appealing in a casual or formal setting.
It is the natural wax coating of these fibers and that they come from under water that allows them to repel liquids and stains making seagrass rugs relatively non-absorbent and stain resistant, and since the material is easy to clean and low maintenance, are suitable for even the busiest of homes.
After harvesting, the long strands of the fibers are dried and spun into the yarns that are then woven into area and broadloom rugs of many variety of designs.
Seagrass does retain a bit of the grassy scent but it soon dissipates once the rug is lay out over time.
Seagrass fibers are left undyed leaving nature to provide the variations of colors ranging from light brown to khaki tans and sage greens. It is a warm neutral tone that is very versatile and accentuates any room you choose to use these unique area rugs.
Seagrass rugs are easy to take care of and maintain because dirt doesn't cling to the hard fibers but rather rests, loosely in the weave.
But just because it may not look like it needs to be (because it does not show the dirt), it is still best to vacuum your rug on a regular and frequent basis to maintain the fresh appearance.
This will increase carpet life by preventing any soil build up
Take special care when vacuuming if your area rug has a binding border. Don’t let the vacuum sit on or catch on the corner of the rug as this could damage the binding.
If one of the corners of your area rug should become curled, due to foot traffic, simply dampen the area and weigh it down overnight.
